Policies
Attendance
Regular attendance at school is required by law, and children may only be kept from school in cases of illness or breavement. The school is not empowered to make exemptions to this section of the Education Act. An explanation for absence is required, preferably in the form of a telephone message or note. Unexplained absences may lead to Board of Trustees involvement and in extreme cases to Court action.
Sickness at School
The school policy is to inform parents or caregivers immediately if children become ill or are injured at school. Parents and caregivers are expected to make necessary arrangements to collect children and take them home. It is essential that the school has home and work telephone numbers as well as alternative emergency contact details and the name of the family doctor in the case of extreme emergency.
Homework
The amount of homework set will vary from teacher to teacher, but in general children will be expected to complete half an hour each night (Monday to Thursday) with optional homework in weekends.
Bicycles
Bicycles are to be left in the school cycle compound (entrance Pembroke Street) during the day. Children who go home for lunch will leave their cycles in other stands outside the compound area. We recommend that all cycles be locked, regardless of which area they are placed in. The school does not accept any responsibility for bicycles left at school – this is done entirely at the owner's risk.
Lunches
We encourage students to bring a wholesome prepared lunch from home. The school does sell food from the Canteen at moderate cost, with an emphasis on healthy food such as filled rolls, juice, flavoured milk, hot dogs, yoghurt and sushi.
Stationery
Early in the first week each student will be issued with a list of stationery requirements for the year. We also recommend that each student purchase his or her own basic dictionary and calculator.
Library
The school has a well-stocked library from which students are encouraged to borrow books. Parents are required to take responsibility for books lost or damaged during the time of loan and to ensure that books taken home are cared for and returned undamaged.
Damage to School Property
Students at Chisnallwood are encouraged to take care of their school but in the event of breakage or damage resulting from vandalism or carelessness, restitution will be sought.
